Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better than her stage name Queen Latifah. In film, music and on television, Queen Latifah has received the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple split at the time Latifah turned ten. Latifah was born and was raised within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. When she was 8 when her mother gave her the stage name Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10" She was a center forward on her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was one of the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The song was sent to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was a member of Latifah at the time and was awed by the single. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
